Jason Cundy has told TalkSPORT that he believes Leeds United will beat Derby County in Wednesday night’s Championship play-off semi-final – and then beat Aston Villa in the final.
Leeds earned a 1-0 win at Pride Park thanks to Kemar Roofe’s second-half strike on Saturday evening. Now, they will be looking to hold onto that lead on Wednesday night at Elland Road.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be without Roofe, as well as Tyler Roberts, Gjanni Alioski and Barry Douglas will all be missing the match while Pontus Jansson remains a doubt.
Former Tottenham and Chelsea midfielder Cundy was asked who he thought would gain promotion via the play-offs, and he responded by saying Leeds would beat Derby and then Villa in the final.
“My choice would be Leeds,” Cundy said. “Derby need a performance on Wednesday, they didn’t play particularly well in the first leg. Leeds looked comfortable, and they’ve had the measure of Derby – three games, three wins.
“Elland Road is one of the toughest place to go. Derby have got to go and put one of their best performances of the season, to get anything. Leeds are favourites, and if I have to stick my neck out, Leeds to get promoted.”
Leeds are strong favourites to beat Derby after three wins in three matches against Frank Lampard’s side this season, clocking up an aggregate score of 7-1.
But the Whites still have work to do. Derby still pack a punch in the form of Harry Wilson, Mason Mount and more. Martyn Waghorn could also be fit to play against the Whites.
Leeds are favourites for the tie, but to claim Leeds will beat Villa is a tough call. If the Whites do get to the final, it will be down to who turns up on the day.
