Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped to sign a new central defender this summer. With doubt surrounding the future of Toby Alderweireld, this could be an area Mauricio Pochettino looks to strengthen.
But there is one youngster waiting in the wings who could be set for a bright future. If Japhet Tanganga impresses on the pre-season tour to Asia, then he could convince Daniel Levy to put his chequebook away.
Tanganga is the current captain of Tottenham’s U23 side but he is yet to make his first-team debut. He is a physical defender with pace and strength in abundance but he needs a chance to step up to senior level.
The 20-year-old is currently with the Spurs squad on their pre-season tour. He is one of a number of youngsters Pochettino has decided to take a closer look at.
If Alderweireld does leave, Tanganga needs to show he is ready for first-team action. Cameron Carter-Vickers is out injured so he is naturally the next in line for a promotion.
The England U20 international needs to show that he can rotate with Juan Foyth, Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertongthen in that role. If Pochettino feels Tanganga is ready, Spurs can save their pennies this summer. If not, then a loan spell would be the best career path to develop his game at senior level.
