Jan Vertonghen has claimed that he wants to play against Tottenham Hotspur at some stage in the Champions League this season.

Spurs beat the odds last term to finish inside the top four. They looked down and out at one point, but Antonio Conte revolutionised the club and led them back into the Champions League.

Vertonghen spoke to Tottenham’s official website this week, where he has been branded as a ‘modern-day Spurs legend’.

The Belgian spent eight years at Spurs, and he was always a fan favourite. He’s still adored by Tottenham supporters, and he has now expressed his desire to play against them in the Champions League this term.

Vertonghen, who plays his football with Portuguese giants Benfica these days, said: “I just hope we can meet in the Champions League, that would be great, something special.

“I’ve played against all my former clubs, so it would be nice to play against Spurs. That would be something I’d look forward to.

“It’s another exciting start to the season, a lot to play for, so, good times! I feel good. The age is not really catching up with me, okay, maybe a bit! I feel good, I’m lucky to be able to play at the highest level in Europe.

“I hope I can play another couple of years, that’s definitely how I’m feeling, and we’ll see how it goes this season.”

Spurs get a favourable draw

The Champions League group-stage draw took place in Istanbul yesterday and Tottenham will be really happy with the teams they’ll face prior to the knockout rounds of the competition.

Spurs are joined by Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting Lisbon and Olympique Marseille in Group D. Conte will fancy his side’s chances of winning the group quite comfortably.

Vertonghen’s Benfica, however, are in a much tougher group. They’ve been drawn alongside French champions Paris Saint-Germain and Italian giants Juventus in Group H.

The Belgian really wants to play against Tottenham in the Champions League this term, but that looks extremely unlikely as his side will have to pull off a miracle to get past the group stages.
