Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has sent a cheeky message to Eric Dier on Twitter in response to the England international penning a new contract with Spurs.

The 26-year-old has been with Tottenham since joining in 2014 from Sporting Lisbon, and has made 239 competitive appearances for Spurs, scoring 11 goals and claiming 11 assists.

Dier’s Tottenham contract was due to expire next summer but, on Tuesday morning, Spurs confirmed that the defensive ace had penned a new deal which takes him to the summer of 2024.

“I’m really happy to continue here and commit to this new journey we are on,” Dier is quoted by BBC Sport as saying.

“The club gave me my opportunity in England and has given me so much but I want to have even better times.”

Vertonghen opted to go down the friendly banter route with an eight-word message in response to the club’s official Twitter communication:

Dier, who has been playing at centre-back recently having made his name as a defensive midfielder, helped Spurs finish second in the Premier League in 2016-17 and reach last season’s Champions League final.

Tottenham have won four of their last seven matches to go up to seventh in the Premier League table, and will be guaranteed a spot in next season’s Europa League if they see off Crystal Palace on Sunday.
