Jan Vertonghen came up against Tottenham Hotspur attacker Gareth Bale on Wednesday night as Belgium and Wales did battle in their first 2022 World Cup qualifying match – and Vertonghen has posted on Instagram.

Despite going behind to Bale’s Wales, Belgium won the match 3-1 after a shaky start. The game began after Vertonghen and Bale – former teammates at Spurs – met in the middle, with both players wearing the armband.

There was a very Tottenham-feel to the match, with Joe Rodon at the back for Wales. Ben Davies pulled out with injury, but Toby Alderweireld combined with Vertonghen in defence. Bale made the early difference.

A brilliant first-time pass from Bale found Liverpool midfielder Harry Wilson who finished with aplomb – but Belgium came back roaring. Kevin De Bruyne scored the first, lashing home an effort from 25 yards to equalise.

Thorgan Hazard made it 2-1 with a well-placed header from a Thomas Meunier cross and it was 3-1 in the second half when Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku finally found the net – scoring a penalty after a foul by Chris Mepham.

Vertonghen posted on Instagram after the match, with the Benfica veteran captioning the post “rolling back the years” as he uploaded a picture alongside Bale – who has certainly caught himself in the headlines this week.
