Jan Vertonghen calls for unity after Bayern Munich humiliation

Jan Vertonghen admitted he felt ‘ashamed’.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has pleaded with the fans to back this group of players. Following the 7-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich, Vertonghen told talkSPORT that the players were still together.

Vertonghen admitted that he felt “ashamed” and “extremely hurt” after the heavy loss. The Belgian defender was part of a defence that shipped seven goals at home and he added that it was “embarrassing”.

But he clearly feels that something drastic needs to change. Tottenham’s start to the season has been poor and there have been questions about the attitudes of some players. However, Vertonghen feels that the group is still working together.

Vertonghen told talkSPORT: “Keep supporting us. I believe we have the people in the team to overcome this situation. This is a bad incident but this group is together.

“We have to stay together. We will turn this around. I’m not walking away from this, that’s why I’m speaking to you guys, we have to take responsibility and we will.”

TBR’s view

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact reason why Tottenham have struggled so much this season. Perhaps there are a number of contributing factors. But Vertonghen is right – only unity will drag Spurs out of this slump.

Tottenham need to win some silverware but they are out of the EFL Cup and now face an uphill battle in the Champions League. With the Premier League slipping away with every poor result, it is difficult to see how Spurs will achieve some success this season – unless there is a major change in mentality.
