Jamie Shackleton's return could leave Leeds revelation in strange position

Leeds United appear to have received a big boost ahead of their Championship clash with Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, with Marcelo Bielsa suggesting that Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton are back from injury – in comments reported by Leeds Live.

Cooper’s return looks to be particularly important for Leeds. Gaetano Berardi has responded well since facing plenty of criticism after the defeat at Millwall. But having the captain back will provide the team with a lift.

But he may not be the only player to make a return to the team. Shackleton was excellent after coming in for Adam Forshaw ahead of the win at Barnsley in September.

And it would be no surprise to see Shackleton come back into the side for one of the coming games. The 20-year-old has never let the side down when he has got a chance – no matter which position he is playing in.

But Shackleton coming back into the team could leave Stuart Dallas in a strange position, with the Northern Irishman coming in to play in central midfield in the last few games.

Could Bielsa leave Dallas out of his side?

It is certainly not out of the question for Bielsa to keep Dallas in the middle of the park. The Leeds boss has rarely taken a player out of his team due to anything other than injury. And he may decide that the former Brentford man is doing well enough to keep his place.

However, should he decide to make a change – perhaps after an under-par performance – Leeds could find themselves in a situation which sees arguably their best-performing player this season having to settle for a place on the bench.

Dallas was outstanding at right-back in the opening weeks of the season. And it appeared that Luke Ayling was slightly fortunate that injuries elsewhere meant that he and Dallas could get into the same lineup.

Ayling is now performing well. So it is difficult to see Dallas moving back into that role unless Ayling sustains another injury.

So if Shackleton comes back in in one of the coming games, Dallas may find himself having to wait for another chance.

No player in the Leeds squad appears to have enjoyed a bigger transformation in 2019 than Dallas. But somehow, it now looks as though there could be a question mark over his place in the side.
