Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp was very impressed with the performance of Sadio Mane for his old club against Southampton on Saturday.
The Saints, another of Redknapp’s former employers, were perhaps unlucky not to come back and snatch a 2-2 draw, but Mane broke the deadlock as the Reds won out 2-1 at St Mary’s.
In the Daily Mail, Redknapp wrote: “Sadio Mane is making a great case to be considered Liverpool’s main man above Mohamed Salah. The 27-year-old is producing magic on the pitch and would walk into any team. He showed that against Southampton, scoring a screamer then setting up Roberto Firmino.
“No one has scored more Premier League goals than him in 2019. He took his tally to 15 on Saturday, and not a single one of those has come from the penalty spot. In Liverpool’s last 30 games, Mane has scored 20 goals, Salah has put away 12 and Firmino eight. He is now performing as well as he has ever done under Jurgen Klopp.”
TBR’s View – Mane’s all-round game is better than Salah’s
At his devastating best, Salah was adept at driving in behind defences directly and slotting home, but Mane carries more of an all-round threat.
For Mane to be outscoring Salah is testament to how well he has dealt with becoming a marked man and the fatigue of going deep into the African Cup of Nations with Senegal this summer.
Is he now Liverpool’s main man? Jurgen Klopp has three superstars there, with Mane, Salah and Virgil van Dijk, as well as the huge quality of Brazilians Alisson and Roberto Firmino and the strength is in the collective over the superstar turns.
