Jamie Redknapp says Spurs have a ‘brilliant’ player in their ranks who’ll be eager to star on Sunday

Tottenham Hotspur forward Gareth Bale has been praised by Spurs cult hero and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final.

The Welshman returned to Tottenham on loan from Real Madrid in September, arriving back in north London to much fanfare.

His time back at Spurs has been mixed so far, having to make do with sporadic game time under former manager Jose Mourinho.

Ryan Mason, now in interim charge of Tottenham, opted to start Bale against Southampton, and he delivered a superb performance en route to a 2-1 win.

“Showed his enduring quality again with a lovely floaty finish and was Spurs’s brightest forward for the most part,” wrote the Evening Standard, who gave him an 8 out of 10 rating.

“It’s almost like he should have been playing more…”

Those sentiments were echoed by Redknapp, who wondered why the previous manager wasn’t giving Bale much more game time, and believed he’d be looking forward to the League Cup final meeting with Manchester City on Sunday.

“There wasn’t a great deal (Mason) could do against Southampton (in terms of stamping his mark on the team) but what we did see was Gareth Bale in brilliant form and he’ll be looking forward to this game at the weekend,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“Some of the things he did in that game was vintage Bale and it just makes you wonder why the previous manager wasn’t playing him more. He wants to play and he showed that against Southampton because he was the best player on that pitch by a mile.”

You get that sometimes, don’t you? A player who’s been struggling under one manager all of a sudden looks completely invigorated as soon as another one comes in.

“We want to attack, we’re a big club, we want to attack and we did that today,” Bale said after the midweek win.

Hopefully, with Mason at the helm, Spurs can begin looking like their old selves again – an exciting, swashbuckling outfit.
