Jamie Redknapp says Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is having a nightmare

Jamie Redknapp has suggested on Saturday Night Football (broadcast on Sky Sports; 13/2; 19:36) that Hugo Lloris is having a nightmare right now after the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper endured another tough evening at Manchester City.

Lloris came in for a lot of criticism in midweek. Spurs were beaten 5-4 by Everton in an incredible FA Cup tie at Goodison Park.

The Frenchman seemed to make a couple of mistakes, particularly for the Toffees’ first goal. So he had something of a point to prove heading into Saturday’s trip to the Etihad Stadium.

It is difficult to be critical of a goalkeeper for not saving a penalty. However, City’s opening goal came despite Lloris getting a good hand to Rodri’s spot-kick.

He then had another disappointing moment as Ilkay Gundogan’s strike squirmed under him to double the home side’s lead after the break.

Once again, he seemed to get enough on the effort to potentially keep it out. However, the ball found its way into the back of the net.

And when asked about Lloris’s role in that second goal, Redknapp suggested that the goalkeeper – along with those directly in front of him – is going through a really tough period.

“Yeah, he’s having a nightmare at the moment,” he told Sky Sports. “But I think the whole defence is lacking confidence. It really is a team that’s struggling on every front, defensively, attacking.”

There is no question that Lloris – who earns £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – has been one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers. However, the 34-year-old’s current run of form will be alarming for Jose Mourinho.

There have now been three occasions in the last two games when goals have come despite Lloris being in the right position to make contact with the ball.

His position may not be under threat just yet. But Joe Hart would perhaps be forgiven for thinking he may have a fantastic opportunity should he start Thursday’s Europa League clash.
