Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes new Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta needs to be ruthless with midfield pair Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil.
The duo, both signed by Arsene Wenger, have come under intense criticism and Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail that Arteta needs to get tough.
He said: “Could you imagine Granit Xhaka doing what he did towards Arsenal fans, or Mesut Ozil kicking his gloves in anger, if Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp were in charge at Arsenal? No, me neither. Players get away with too much at that club and new manager Mikel Arteta has a culture problem to solve.
“Arteta talked about being ‘ruthless’ at his unveiling on Friday and that is what he has to be. Being a number two is a world away from being a number 1. Arteta now has to make the big decisions, nurture players, talk to the press, take defeats on the chin. Managers and their sidekicks react differently to defeats. Let’s see how Arteta does.”
TBR’s View – Arteta needs to take tips from Guardiola on how to change a club’s culture
Pep Guardiola went into a club which had won the Premier League far more recently than Arsenal, which was willing to spend far more than Arsenal and had been preparing for his arrival since Manuel Pellegrini’s first day.
And it still took him a full season and a ruthless clearing of the decks to take Manchester City from where he found them into the winning machine they are today.
Arteta has to follow his lead in terms of transforming the culture of the club he has just taken over, and that should really involve shipping Ozil and Xhaka out.
