Former Liverpool midfielder, Jamie Redknapp, has said the club will have no problem in replacing Gini Wijnaldum this summer, if he does indeed leave.
Dutch midfielder Wijnaldum is expected to leave Anfield this summer. He’s ran his contract down to the final few months, with FSG yet to budge or bow to the midfielder’s demands. A move to Barcelona, then, seems to be on the cards.
But Redknapp, who played for both Liverpool and Spurs at the very top level in the Premier League, believes that while Wijnaldum has been great for the Reds, he can be replaced.
“Wijnaldum has been a brilliant signing for Liverpool. His energy levels are fantastic but they have a feeling that, long-term, giving a player that much money until he is 33 or 34 – they don’t want to do it,” Redknapp said. (The Mirror)
“I am sure Jurgen Klopp won’t want to lose him as you can’t deny he is a fantastic player but he is not irreplaceable, you can find players like him, and Liverpool will be in the market trying to find the next Wijnaldum.
“Time will tell whether it is the right decision but I do understand what Liverpool are trying to do.”
Wijnaldum would be leaving the Reds having won the Champions League and Premier League since arriving from Newcastle. He’d also go down in club folklore, having been integral in the amazing comeback win over Barcelona.
TBR View: Redknapp is correct, Wijnaldum is good but not spectacular
Gini Wijnaldum is a good midfield player without being anything amazing. Yes, he does a lot of things well but he’s not exceptional in any area really.
The Reds could find a replacement and to be honest, in Curtis Jones, they might already have one within the club.
