Liverpool won their opening Premier League game against Bournemouth on Friday as they attempt to retain their title.
The Reds suffered a bit of a scare against the Cherries, and they certainly need to be better going forward if they’re to dominate the league in the same way they did last season.
Luckily, more help could soon be on the way.
Geovani Leoni has signed for Liverpool as an extra centre-back option, while Marc Guehi could join the Reds too.
On top of that, Alexander Isak remains a Liverpool target, and his situation at Newcastle is turning rather sour.
Speaking to Aadam Patel from The Mail, Jamie Redknapp has been discussing Isak’s situation, and he says this is a horrible scenario for the Newcastle striker.

Jamie Redknapp says Alexander Isak situation is ‘horrible’
Redknapp shared his verdict on the Isak situation.
The striker has been training alone recently and is apparently unwilling to play for Newcastle ever again.
“It’s a horrible situation. I don’t like it. I’ve seen it happen many times in the Premier League.
“I’ve met Alex. I like him a lot. He’s a nice guy. You can see he wants to do well. He’s been an amazing professional since he’s been at Newcastle. His head’s been turned and I totally get it.
“When Liverpool come calling, he wants to win the title. He terrorised Liverpool over the last few years in the Carabao Cup and every Premier League game. Virgil always struggled to deal with him.
“I’m not surprised, but Liverpool have got to get the 150 on the table, get it done and move on. Or if they’re not going to, they’ve got to find a way. There’s always a way back for Alexander Isak at Newcastle. People are saying there isn’t, and there always is.
“Wayne Rooney had a similar situation at Man Utd. With Alex Ferguson, it looked like that was going to be the end of him. Never going to play for Man Utd again.
“He ends up staying and still became a hero. There is always a world where he could sign. I’m amazed that Newcastle haven’t, they might have already done it, they’ve tried to break the bank and give him everything he wants. Give him Salah money. That would make sense to me because he’s your best player.
“He’s an icon at the club. I would be surprised if we wake up in a few more days’ time and he ends up signing. It just wouldn’t surprise me either way. In a couple of weeks’ time, Liverpool have got to go to Newcastle. Whatever way that goes, it’s going to be fascinating.
“I’m a Liverpool fan. I’d love to see him come to Liverpool. I still think Liverpool win the title with or without him. Ekitike is still going to be a good signing. It feels that something has to happen. I don’t like these situations.”
Premier League stars who came back from the brink of exit
Isak’s situation at Newcastle is very sour, it has to be said.
However, as Redknapp says, we have seen this play out before where players have been on the verge of leaving only to work their way back into the squad and become heroes.
| Player | Club (Season) | Potential Move | What Happened? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wayne Rooney | Manchester United (2010–11) | Move to Manchester City | Submitted a transfer request publicly and looked like he would leave the club. Eventually signed a new contract and became the club’s all-time leading scorer. |
| Steven Gerrard | Liverpool (2005) | Move to Chelsea | Handed in a transfer request after the Champions League win in 2005. Admitted he was 24 hours away from joining Chelsea, but had a last-minute change of heart. |
| Luis Suárez | Liverpool (2013) | Move to Arsenal | Arsenal bid £40m plus £1 to trigger a so-called release clause. Suarez wanted a move to the Emirates, but was persuaded to stay for one more year. |
Isak’s situation at Newcastle looks unsalvageable, but, as we’ve seen before, things can change in an instant in football.
Don’t be shocked if there are more twists and turns in this saga yet.
