Jamie Redknapp says Harry Kane was perfect for England on Monday

Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports that Harry Kane was perfect after England opened their World Cup campaign with an emphatic win over Iran on Monday.

The Three Lions completely exceeded expectations with a 6-2 victory. It was not necessarily the ideal display, with Iran getting two goals during the second-half. However, some of the football England played was scintillating.

Remarkably, Kane failed to score any of the six goals England bagged. But he certainly made a major contribution in the win, providing two assists for Gareth Southgate’s side.

Harry Kane was perfect

Kane may perhaps be a little disappointed that he did not score. Of course, he is looking to become the first player to win Golden Boot awards at two different World Cups.

But he could have hardly asked for his side to get off to a better start. And Redknapp definitely thinks that Kane was absolutely outstanding in the comfortable victory for the Euro 2020 finalists.

“He is so important for this team, as a captain, that authority he has. We need him,” he told Sky Sports.

“You can see he feels really free with his play at the moment. He’s looking great. And it’s exactly what we need. He’s our talisman. Right now, those results are great. But we’re going to need the odd 1-0 if we’re going to win this tournament.

“And that’s when you’re going to be looking at someone like Harry Kane to get us that all important goal when everyone else is maybe a little bit edgy to take the shot. He’ll never pass up that opportunity.

“It was a really important game for him, the team. As captain as well, the way he led, it was perfect.”

With the amount of quality England boast in the final third, Kane is going to open his account in the near future surely.

Southgate started with a front three of Kane, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling. And he was able to bring on Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson.

Many teams would be desperate to boast that kind of depth in attack. But there is absolutely no doubt that the Tottenham man is crucial to knitting it all together.

Kane played about as well as he could without finding the back of the net. It is surely not going to be too long before he is indeed off the mark at Qatar.
