Jamie Redknapp says 21-year-old is ‘too raw’ to make Arsenal impact

Jamie Redknapp has suggested that Joe Willock doesn’t have the required quality to get Arsenal out of their current Premier League predicament.

He was discussing each Gunners player in a feature for the Daily Mail in which he had to say whether the Arsenal players were kidders or fighters.

Many supporters have demanded to see more of Willock with Mikel Arteta restricting his game time to the cup competitions.

The 21-year-old has started two Premier League games in the last month but has been unable to revive Arsenal’s fortunes.

Now, Redknapp has suggested that Willock appears to be somewhat short of the required standard.

He told the Daily Mail: “The 21-year-old has been handed plenty of opportunities to impress this season and appears to add drive and a goal threat from midfield.

“However, Willock still appears too raw amid the pressure of playing in an underperforming team to become a regular at the Emirates Stadium and his decision making in front of goal has often let him down.

“There is no doubt a player who may well go on to enjoy a successful Premier League career, but he would raise a few eyebrows if it was to happen for him at Arsenal.”

TBR View – Redknapp possibly has a point

Arsenal have struggled for creativity this season and it’s easy to see why some supporters wanted Willock to earn a chance.

It’s fair to say he hasn’t had the desired effect on the team, however.

Despite his tender years, he has played 74 times for the Gunners during his career, scoring 11 goals and registered four assists.

Willock could still enjoy a decent career but he has to start grasping his chances at Arsenal sooner rather than later.

Given their current situation, Arteta is in need of a lift from somewhere and right now, Willock doesn’t look like providing it.
