Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports’ The Football Show (Thursday, 09:05am) that he believes Mauricio Pochettino could return to Tottenham in the future – but suggested that the Argentine may have discussed a return to keep supporters happy.

Pochettino, who is reportedly being considered by Newcastle United’s prospective owners, told BT Sport on Wednesday night that he is desperate to return to Tottenham in the future – after being sacked by the club last November.

Jose Mourinho replaced Pochettino in the Spurs hotseat, but many supporters questioned the decision to get rid of the Argentine – and the former Southampton remains a favourite among Spurs fans.

Asked on BT Sport about a return to Spurs, Pochettino said: “It was an amazing journey that finished in a way no-one wants to finish. But deep in my chest, in my soul, in my heart, I am sure we will cross again. My dream is to come back.”

Ex-Tottenham star Redknapp was asked about Pochettino’s comments over a return to Spurs, and he feels that he has been slightly disrespectful to Mourinho – while also suggesting that Pochettino may have said what he said to keep fans happy.

“I wouldn’t be too happy if I am Jose Mourinho. Sometimes with managers, they say things to keep fans on side. Fans love him there. Jose went back to Chelsea. I wouldn’t be surprised if he manages Tottenham again in a few years,” Redknapp said.

TBR’s view – Has Mourinho improved Tottenham?

Given the surroundings Mourinho took over in, the Portuguese gaffer has taken Spurs from well down to the table to within contention of European qualification – despite an awful injury list.

Mourinho has had just one January transfer window to make his mark on the squad, and has had to deal with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Moussa Sissoko, Hugo Lloris and more on the sidelines.

Mourinho has massively improved Spurs, though he is still criticised. Could Pochettino have done the same? Things had gone stale under the Argentine, and it took the appointment of Mourinho to get Spurs back on track.
