Former Southampton midfielder Jamie Redknapp has praised the way Ralph Hasenhuttl has recovered from his side’s 9-0 loss at home to Leicester earlier this season.
Hasenhuttl masterminded a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture on Saturday and Sky Sports pundit Redknapp told the Daily Mail how impressed he’s been with the Austrian.
He said: “Imagine the pressure Ralph Hasenhuttl was feeling after that 9-0 loss. He will have walked into that dressing room afterwards lost for words. He will have known the following day’s newspapers would be filled with quotes from club sources claiming the manager has lost the players’ support and must go.
“The ultimate embarrassment, the lowest point of Hasenhuttl’s managerial career. He probably left St Mary’s Stadium that night expecting to get the sack, Yet the club’s board went down a very rare route. They showed patience. They said Hasenhuttl is still the right man for the job. It is looking like a masterstroke.”
TBR’s View – Southampton finally playing Hasenhuttl football
Southampton showed signs of life last season with Hasenhuttl’s football, but it faded away in the early part of the season.
But over the festive period, the Saints beat Chelsea and Southampton without conceding and have now come from behind to beat Leicester on their own patch.
This isn’t just a case of Danny Ings scoring for fun. Hasenhuttl’s tactics are beginning to click and he has more than justified his employers’ faith in him.
