Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports (broadcast on 4/1; 22:07) that Bryan Gil deserved a special mention after Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday after improving considerably in the second-half.

Spurs had a massive point to prove at Selhurst Park. They have been underwhelming for some time. And they were looking to end a run of 10 games in all competitions in which they have conceded the opening goal.

They were ultimately able to get the victory. Harry Kane scored twice, while Matt Doherty and Son Heung-min also got on the scoresheet for Antonio Conte’s men.

But perhaps one of the most notable displays came from Gil, who kept his place from the weekend with Dejan Kulusevski still sidelined. The Spaniard had struggled to stand out in the loss over Villa.

Redknapp felt that he was also a little disappointing in the first 45 minutes against Palace. However, he was full of praise for the 21-year-old’s improvement after the break – with his assist for Kane’s second goal receiving credit.

“Bryan Gil deserves a special mention,” he told Sky Sports. “We said at half-time he hasn’t done enough, but he certainly came into the game second-half. This is a really nice piece of play. Harry gets it there, sets it out to him. And he plays a pinpoint pass to him.”

Conte’s use of Gil has been somewhat frustrating. Clearly, he is not yet the finished article. But he is someone who has the potential to make things happen.

Obviously, you can understand why the likes of Kulusevski and Richarlison are ahead of him in the pecking order. But he does seem to offer something a bit different. And with that, he should have surely played more.

He is still some way off pushing ahead of either Kulusevski or Richarlison in the pecking order. But he has proved that he can make an impact in the Premier League.

Should he stay at Spurs, he is surely someone who will enjoy a lot more game-time than he has had so far.
