Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports (broadcast on 17/10 from 16:00) that he believes that Tottenham Hotspur have a really good prospect in Cristian Romero following their win over Newcastle United on Sunday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men beat the Magpies 3-2 in the latter’s first game since they came under new ownership.

It was not a perfect performance from the visitors at St James’ Park, even if there were some incredibly promising signs going forward.

They were a goal behind inside two minutes, with Callum Wilson easily beating Romero to the ball and heading past Hugo Lloris.

It was not the easiest afternoon for the centre-back. But it must not be forgotten that he was only just returning to the fold after going away on international duty with Argentina.

And Redknapp insisted that he has seen enough to believe that Romero is actually going to prove to be a fantastic player for Tottenham – and may actually benefit from his error.

“I think they might have a good player in Romero as well,” he told Sky Sports, “I know he made a mistake today but sometimes you make a mistake in a big game, it can be the best thing that can happen to you.

“I think he’s going to be a very talented defender, I like what I see. He’s got all the attributes. He’s aggressive, at times he might get sent off. But I think they’ve got a really good signing and he’ll learn from those mistakes.”

Romero has track record to suggest he can be huge success at Tottenham

Romero is still adapting to his new surroundings in North London. His cause has not been helped by the two most recent international breaks this season.

But he has the track record to suggest that he could prove to be an amazing signing.

He was Serie A’s best defender last year. And he also shone as Argentina won the Copa America in the summer. It is easy to forget that he is still a youngster at 23.

And Tottenham do not appear to have a lot of players knocking on the door. The likes of Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez have a point to prove if they get a chance.

So there is definitely an opportunity for Romero to cement his spot in the side.
