Jamie Redknapp makes big prediction about Leeds star Kalvin Phillips, after sparkling Euro 2020 outing

Jamie Redknapp has made a big prediction about Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips in his Daily Mail column, after his sparkling display on Sunday. Starting for England against Croatia in the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 opener, Phillips was excellent and even laid on an assist for Raheem Sterling.

Phillips, 25, was in contention but certainly not a guaranteed starter on Sunday. But he partnered Declan Rice in midfield – and to the surprise of many, played further forward than he does for Leeds. Indeed, Phillips played a delightful pass into Sterling who tucked home the winner.

It has been a brilliant 12 months for Phillips. Promotion with Leeds, becoming an England regular – Sunday was his ninth cap – and helping Leeds finish ninth in the Premier League. Now, Redknapp has predicted he can become the “unsung hero” of this summer’s Euro 2020.

“In a midfield that consisted of some pretty household names, this 25-year-old player from Leeds was different class, and he could become the unsung hero of this tournament,” Redknapp claimed. “He was the boss. His passing, both short and long, was on point and he exuded comfort.”

Should Leeds ace Phillips now start for England against Scotland?

Many will have understood a more-reserved approach against Croatia – but will want a more attacking side against Scotland. Playing Phillips alongside Rice is certainly considered more conservative and many will want to see Jack Grealish start on Friday. But Phillips might have changed that opinion.

Man of the match on Sunday, surely he has played his way into the starting line-up with his efforts. Not just because he was brilliant, but he also showed versatility with his ability to get forward. He simply has got to start against Steve Clarke’s side on Friday.
