Jamie Redknapp lauds ‘selfless’ Liverpool star after Saturday win

Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that it’s remarkable that Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino hasn’t scored at Anfield during 2019/20.

The ex-Reds central midfielder does believe that the Brazilian is the focal point of Jurgen Klopp’s team, however.

Firmino has scored eight goals in the Premier League this season but all of them have come away from Anfield.

Redknapp doesn’t believe it’s a major problem, however, and suggests the 28-year-old is still the focal point of Liverpool’s attacking threat.

He told the Daily Mail: “Roberto Firmino hasn’t scored at Anfield in 2019/20. How remarkable is that?

“Firmino comes short for the ball, creates space for others, connects attacks and creates opportunities for his team-mates.

“Jurgen Klopp will recognise the job that Firmino is doing, too, even if he isn’t the one banging in the goals at Anfield himself.

“The Brazilian is the modern No.9 – selfless and not purely relied upon for scoring. He is the focal point of Klopp’s 4-3-3 system.”

Firmino has been a solid addition to Liverpool’s team since arriving in 2015 from Hoffenheim for £29 million.

He has played 234 games for the Reds, bagging 76 goals and registering 59 assists for the club.

As Redknapp quite rightly suggests though, his game isn’t just about scoring goals for the team.

The work he does out of possession is just as important and he is a vital component of the way Klopp’s team play.

Every team needs a Firmino and his boss, team-mates and the club’s supporters clearly appreciate the work he does for the team.

Firmino earns £180,000-a-week at Anfield and despite not getting the level of goals that Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah do, he is still worth his weight in gold.
