Jamie Redknapp has been effusive in his praise of Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder after the Blades’ 2-2 draw against Chelsea on Saturday.
Wilder’s men battled back from 2-0 down at half time to stun Frank Lampard’s side and secure a point at Stamford Bridge – which impressed Redknapp.
In the Daily Mail, he wrote: “Calling Chris Wilder an ‘old-school manager’ is wrong. I find it disrespectful to him and his team. Wilder is so far ahead, he is the most forward-thinking manager in the Premier League.
“I prefer to judge a coach on his tactics. When it comes to that, Wilder is up there with the very best. Hands up if you thought overlapping centre backs would get found out in the top flight? With an innovator like Wilder, they will always stand a chance of springing a surprise and surviving.”
TBR’s View – Pundits finally waking up and moving away from the lazy stereotypes
For the pundits who don’t pay any attention to the EFL, seeing Sheffield United come up from the Championship invoked all kinds of lazy stereotypes.
A local man as manager, who came up through the lower leagues, with a squad of British players who have done the same caused many to imagine it’ll be a ‘back to basics’ approach for Sheffield United.
But actually, the Blades are closer to following the Bournemouth blueprint and becoming an attractive side to watch and play for.
That has boosted Eddie Howe’s reputation and made Bournemouth one of the most watchable sides in the division and Wilder looks keen to go down the same road. Finally the pundits are taking notice of what is actually going on at Bramall Lane.
