Jamie Redknapp delivers verdict on new Tottenham man Cristian Romero
Jamie Redknapp has told the Sky Sports Premier League Preview podcast that he is excited at the prospect of Tottenham newbie Cristian Romero.
Romero, 23, only joined Tottenham in the summer from Atalanta – having won the Serie A Player of the Season award last season.
Then, Romero won Copa America with Argentina – establishing himself as one of the first names on the team sheet under Lionel Scaloni.
Romero clocked up just his tenth appearance since joining Tottenham on Wednesday night – as Spurs knocked Burnley out of the Carabao Cup.
A tricky tie, Romero was handed the man-of-the-match award – nullifying Burnley’s Matej Vydra, Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez.
Now, he faces Cristiano Ronaldo on Sunday – as Spurs take on Manchester United. But ex-Spurs star Redknapp is excited at the prospect of Romero.
“I think Romero could be a player. I like him. He made a mistake, got done for the goal against Newcastle,” Redknapp said.
“But from what I hear and what I see, he is going to be a really good signing for them. There are positives for Tottenham.”
Redknapp on Romero: Paratici has secured Tottenham a gem
Yes, Romero cost £50million and has since annoyed Tottenham by travelling to represent his country. A knee knock has also hampered his progress.
But having started to generate some momentum and overcome that knee niggle, Romero is looking like he is worth every penny of the £50million.
He has also shown he can adapt to playing alongside either Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez – the Colombia international also impressed in the week.
Redknapp is right. Romero is looking like a real player for Tottenham, and Paratici has pulled off a masterstroke in getting him.
