Former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder, Jamie Redknapp, criticised Antonio Conte last night for his substitution against Brentford last night.
The Spurs boss brought on just Davinson Sanchez for Ryan Sessegnon. It moved Ben Davies to left wing-back but didn’t alter much, as Tottenham failed to have a shot on goal for the second game in a row. The result left Spurs two points behind Arsenal in the race for the top four.

And speaking on Sky Sports after the game, former midfielder Redknapp took a shot at Conte for not changing things enough after two games with no success in the final third.
“I think as a player sometimes you go ok, let’s try a different system, let’s give them a problem. He made the one substitution, he brought on Sanchez and put Davies to wing-back and you think, well that’s not really an inspiring substitution,” Redknapp said.
“Maybe go to a flat back four, get Kane and Son closer together, just give them a different problem. Because in two games, to be so poor, after playing so well before that. It was a masterclass every week in attacking football. I think as a coach you’ve gotta go let’s try something different because they were too predictable today Spurs.”
Tottenham still have the top four in their own hands. They play Arsenal and must win that game to stand any chance of landing the final spot.
TBR’s View: Conte Could Have Done More But He Needs More Players
It was certainly strange to see Conte not really do anything with the system or tactics here. It was crying out for something to be tweaked and nothing really happened.
If anything, too, it highlights how Conte must feel his options off the bench aren’t all that. This could point to the Italian almost telling the board that this summer is crucial for the club in the market.
Tottenham have a real chance to do something special this season but must step up, and that includes Conte.
