Jamie Redknapp amazed by ‘desire’ of Heung-Min Son in Tottenham semi-final win

Jamie Redknapp was left blown away by the desire Tottenham’s Heung-Min Son showed on Tuesday night for his goal during the win over Brentford in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Spurs beat Championship side Brentford 2-0 at home to book their spot in the League Cup final, where they will face either Manchester United or Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho’s side sealed progress courtesy of Moussa Sissoko’s header to open the scoring, but it was a second from Son that wrapped up the cup contest.

Son showed tremendous pace to latch onto a pass in-between the Brentford defenders, before racing away into space and finishing calmly when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The South Korean attacker is such a cool head in front of goal, which is proven in the fact he’s now scored 16 goals in just 25 appearances so far this season in all competitions.

He’s already viewed as a world-class talent after his tremendous rise in the past year, but Sky Sports pundit Redknapp was keen to stress that one of his main attributes is his desire and he picked out what he did for his latest goal.

“What I love about Son is we talk all about his attributes but look at the desire that he shows [for his goal against Brentford],” Redknapp said on Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (5 January, 10:00pm).

“He’s like a 100m sprinter. He’s on the mark and he’s off. He’s got the ability and the finesse with those two little soft touches just to set up the goalkeeper to sit him down… The right-back can’t catch him and it’s a brilliant finish.”

TBR’s View:

Son looks at the peak of his powers right now, something which could also be said for teammate Harry Kane.

28-year-old Son has continued develop year-on-year at Spurs since he joined them back in 2015 and there were doubts over whether or not the left-winger could thrive offensively when Mourinho took charge as manager, but his numbers have flown up.

He’s given a real licence in the final third to go where he wants and the telepathy with forward Kane is exceptional.
