Jamie Redknapp has been discussing his ups and downs of the Premier League season. Whilst naming his team of the campaign for the Daily Mail he also mentioned the player that was his ‘unexpected star’ of the 2018-19 season. The former Tottenham Hotspur man had a current Spurs star in mind.
He named Moussa Sissoko as the player that has surprised him most, admitting that he felt the Frenchman was on his way out of the club last summer.
“Moussa Sissoko’s emergence as Tottenham’s midfield powerhouse.
“I was not alone in thinking that Sissoko would be heading for the exit door last summer. Instead, injuries to Harry Winks and the sale of Mousa Dembele forced Mauricio Pochettino to move Sissoko into the middle.
“It proved a masterstroke — and only underlines just how much Pochettino improves players.
Indeed, that was a sentiment felt by many. Tottenham signed Sissoko for a fee reported by the BBC to be £30 million in 2016. It came after Newcastle United’s relegation and Sissoko’s starring performances for France at the European Championships.
However, he struggled to emulate anything like the form Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino must have been hoping for in his first two seasons at the club.
But this season has been a landmark one for Sissoko in London. His importance to the team is now clear. It was never made more obvious than the contrast in displays when Tottenham took on Ajax with Sissoko and without him.
Twelve months ago nearly every Tottenham fan would have been happy to cut their losses on the £30 million ‘flop’. Now, he must be one of the first names on the Tottenham team-sheet.
