Jamie O’Hara names PL star he’d love to see at Tottenham

Jamie O’Hara told Sky Sports that he would love for Tottenham Hotspur to sign James Ward-Prowse, labelling the Southampton star brilliant after he opened the scoring against Antonio Conte’s men on Tuesday.

Spurs actually remain without a win away from home since Conte was appointed. They went into the clash off the back of five home fixtures in a row in all competitions.

Tottenham were unlucky. Harry Kane saw a second-half goal ruthlessly ruled out for offside. And Fraser Forster was incredibly fortunate to win a free-kick when he flicked the ball into the back of his own net.

Spurs had controlled the game from the moment when Mohammed Salisu was sent off. But they had had to come from behind after Ward-Prowse had given the Saints the lead with an outstanding finish in the 25th minute.

The 27-year-old has now scored in his last three appearances, helping Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side take five points in that run.

His importance to the club has only increased this term. Of course, he signed a new contract as the Saints lost several key players in the summer.

And following the goal, O’Hara insisted that he would be the ideal addition to Conte’s squad – and not just because of the threat he offers from dead-ball situations.

“I’d love him at Tottenham. He gives you 15 goal contributions a season, whether it’s from penalties, from free-kicks, his set-pieces,” he told Sky Sports.

“He’s massive to have in your side. And people can say he’s just a set-piece specialist, he’s not. He’s good on the ball, he works hard, he’s got great energy. He’s a leader. I really like Ward-Prowse, I think he’s brilliant.”

It was a major statement from Ward-Prowse to sign a new contract in the summer. He was linked with a move away, with Aston Villa apparently making a bid.

Nevertheless, the Saints will be aware that keeping him is only going to get all the more difficult. He is in his prime. And Hasenhuttl’s men’s progress has not been linear.

A club such as Tottenham would certainly benefit from having a player with that creativity in the middle of the park. But they will surely have to be prepared to part with a huge sum to get a deal done.
