Jamie O’Hara is convinced that Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty would be a good fit at Tottenham, amid reported interest in him from Spurs.
O’Hara, who previously played for both Spurs and Wolves, is an ex-teammate of Doherty from his time at Molineux and got to play alongside him in the early stages of his career.
Doherty, 28, has been part of a team that has risen from League One to the top-flight in recent years and the last two seasons he’s proven himself to be a quality Premier League performer.
The Republic of Ireland international is an attack-minded defender that has suited the wing-back role perfectly at Wolves under manager Nuno Espirito Santo and it allows him to get forward freely.
He scored seven goals and supplied five assists across all competitions last season, but importantly as well he’s a part of a solid backline and can do the ugly defensive work too with his back to goal.
According to the Guardian, Spurs are close to securing the signing of Wolves full-back and the deal is set to be agreed at around £12million plus a potential £5m in add-ons.
O’Hara has explained he can picture him slotting into Spurs XI, as current right-back Serge Aurier has been given a licence under manager Jose Mourinho to get forward and he’s often the spare man on the pitch.
“Played with Doherty when I was at Wolves he’s always been fantastic and he’s gone from strength to strength,” O’Hara told Football Daily.
“The position he played for them as wing-back is absolutely frightening, he’s a great lad he will fit straight into that dressing room he’s a great character. He knows how to play right-back, he played right-back anyway he can adapt to any formation.
“I think when you watch Mourinho the way he played he had that lopsided formation with the full-back really bombing on from the right so I think he’s a great addition to the Spurs squad, I think he’ll do well.”

TBR’s View:
Doherty may not be the first name that springs to mind when it comes to the best Premier League full-backs over the last two seasons, but there aren’t many that have performed so consistently as the Wolves mainstay.
He looks like he’s beginning to enter the peak years of his career, which is why to snap him up for under £20million in the current transfer market could prove to be the bargain of the summer.
Aurier looks like he’s improving under Mourinho, but ultimately his defending is still a little too erratic and the Wolves man looks like he could be an upgrade in that department.
