Ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has urged Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to play both Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen against Arsenal at the weekend.
Spurs travel to Arsenal on Sunday for a Premier League fixture and will be looking to earn North London bragging rights.
There will be a lot of eyes on Spurs to see how they respond to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in their last game and also the team selection.
Senior defender Jan Vertonghen is yet to play a single minute this season, with the 32-year-old an unused substitute in the last two matches.
Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen has started only one of the three league games so far, as his future remains unclear.
Pochettino has admitted (BBC Sport) that he doesn’t know where the playmaker’s immediate future lies due to the fact the European window is still open.
Despite the uncertainty around the first-team pair, O’Hara is convinced that Pochettino has to play both against Arsenal.
“He (Pochettino) has to play his best XI, that is a huge game [against Arsenal],” O’Hara said on Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (10:35pm, 26 August).
“He has got to play his best team. Vertonghen has to play and Eriksen has to play.”
After a fairly mediocre start to the season, Spurs could do with a huge win over rivals Arsenal but they must not forget they have become top four regulars in recent years.
Pochettino’s side may not be going into the weekend in the best of form, but have so many match-winners and have a group that reached the Champions League final last season.
Eriksen’s saga continues to run on, but they should at least try make the most of him while he is still on the books and he can definitely unlock the door to the Arsenal defence.
Meanwhile, Vertonghen’s absence has been a bizarre one due to his brilliant form in recent campaigns and fans may feel a little safer with him in defence than Davinson Sanchez.
