Jamie Carrahger claims Liverpool still lack quality in midfield

Jamie Carrahger has explained that Liverpool’s midfield remains a weak link in their team and that they are lacking top quality in that area of the pitch.

The Reds recorded a 1-1 draw against Napoli on Wednesday night at Anfield and that means they still have work to do when they visit Red Bull Salzburg in their final group stage match of the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are looking to defend their Champions League crown this season, but haven’t quite hit top gear yet in European football

The Merseyside giants are at least flying domestically, as they sit top of the Premier League table with 37 points from 13 games.

Carragher is not blown over by Liverpool’s midfield despite their dominance this campaign and feels it was exposed against Napoli.

Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner started as a midfield trio, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Georginio Wijnaldum both entered the action as substitutes.

“It is still an area in midfield that is lacking real quality for the Liverpool team,” Carragher told Viasport.

“You think of the back four and the front three are outstanding, but midfield at times still lacks that real bit of quality.”

TBR’s View:

Liverpool have some world-class operators in both offensive and defensive positions, but don’t quite have the same calibre of player in the centre of the park.

They do have brilliant workhorses such as Fabinho and Wijnaldum, but it seems like Carragher is referring more to the type of playmaker that can cut through an opponent.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has shown in glimpses that he’s the type of Reds midfielder that can offer an attacking threat from a deeper position.

Ex-Reds playmaker Philippe Coutinho is exactly the type of player that would give something extra to an already superb team, but Liverpool would surely have to spend big money to strengthen.
