‘Not good enough’: Jamie Carragher says Antonio Conte really needs to replace Hugo Lloris at Tottenham

Jamie Carragher has claimed Tottenham need to move on from Hugo Lloris if they are to go to the next level.

Lloris was at the centre of proceedings once again last weekend. His error allowed Callum Wilson to score the opening goal for Newcastle. And while there was some debate around if it was a foul or not, Lloris’ actions didn’t go down well.

And writing in his latest column for The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher has said that Spurs need to be looking to move on from Lloris soon.

“Despite his experience and medal haul, Lloris is not good enough to take Spurs to the next level and win the big trophies. He is a World Cup-winner but he makes too many errors and is not the same level as the best around,” Carragher wrote in The Telegraph.

“It is a position where I feel Spurs have been lacking for a while. Add the need for another centre-half – Clement Lenglet’s performance against Newcastle was poor – and Conte’s argument that he needs a few more transfer windows to assemble the squad to meet his objectives is correct.”

Lloris arrived at Spurs in 2012 for a fee that was said to be worth around £13m to Lyon. Since then, he’s amassed more than 400 appearances in North London.

TBR’s View: Time has come for Tottenham and Lloris

As good as Lloris has been for Spurs down the years, Jamie Carragher makes a good point here.

Lloris has been allowing mistakes to creep into his game for a few seasons now. The two against Newcastle weren’t a good look at all and Antonio Conte might well be getting fed up soon.

The problem Spurs have is who do they bring in? They’ve struggled to get anyone to even remotely challenge him in recent seasons. With that in mind, getting a top class replacement will be tough.
