Chelsea have been a bit of a graveyard for up-and-coming managers in recent times.
The Blues have chewed up and spat out the likes of Frank Lampard, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Liam Rosenior in recent years.
Time and time again, the London club have got it wrong with their managers, mis-matching direction, reputation, experience and coaching ability compared to where the club are and where they want to go.
Xabi Alonso is the next man up at Chelsea, and speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has now given his reaction to this appointment.

Jamie Carragher says Xabi Alonso is a ‘great’ appointment
Jamie Carragher hasn’t been shy when it comes to criticising the Chelsea ownership in recent years.
Indeed, Carragher has made his voice heard on numerous occasions, critiquing the Chelsea board for their transfer policy and mistreatment of managers.
However, on this occasion, he has praised the higher-ups at Stamford Bridge, claiming that this is a great appointment.
“I do believe that Chelsea have five or six really top players and there was murmurs that they were starting to think about their future, understandably so with no Champions League football,” Carragher said.
“But I think with the appointment of Xabi Alonso, I think that could keep those players at the club.
“Listen, they still may move on. I don’t know. But I think the signing of someone with that with the calibre of his playing career alone, but also certainly him being seen as one of the real up and coming big managers of the future. Yeah, it’s really exciting for Chelsea. Great appointment.”
What Jamie Carragher said about Xabi Alonso joining Liverpool
Of course, it’s natural for Carragher to be a fan of Alonso. After all, they are former Liverpool teammates.
In fact, once upon a time, Carragher called for Liverpool to hire Alonso after Jurgen Klopp departed.
“Klopp never had to learn how to connect with the Kop. It was like he was born to be the Liverpool manager,” wrote the former Reds defender.
“That’s one of the reasons why Xabi Alonso is already being considered the natural heir. From day one, it was like Xabi was born to be a Liverpool player.
“As he is my former teammate, it is no surprise that so many are clamouring for him to be appointed. I would love Xabi to get the chance.”
Alonso has ended up at Stamford Bridge rather than Anfield, but Carragher clearly still thinks he will be a success.
