Jamie Carragher slams Hugo Lloris after Tottenham lose to Manchester City

Jamie Carragher has had a go at Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris following his performance against Manchester City last night.

Spurs surprised everyone and went two goals up just before half-time. Antonio Conte couldn’t have dreamt of being in a better position, but all the highs of the first half came crashing down.

City battered Spurs after the break, smashing four past Lloris to win the game 4-2.

It wasn’t the greatest of nights for goalkeepers at the Etihad.

Ederson, who is usually so good, tried to pull off a risky pass, but that cost Manchester City. Dejan Kulusevski opened the scoring after that mistake, and Emerson Royal doubled Tottenham Hotspur‘s lead just a few minutes later.

It was Hugo Lloris‘ turn in the second half, and after his howler against Arsenal last weekend, Spurs fans were hoping for a more assured performance from their number one. However, the Frenchman let in four goals, two of which he probably should’ve saved.

Lloris pretty much assisted Julian Alvarez’s opener, while although deflection played a part in Riyad Mahrez’s first goal, the Tottenham skipper should’ve covered his near post much better.

Carragher had his say after the game, and he believes Lloris has become a ‘liability’ for Tottenham now.

He said on Sky Sports: “The goalkeeper for Tottenham right now has been a good goalkeeper for Tottenham. He’s now become a liability and they need to change it.

“They need a new goalkeeper for next season. Antonio Conte has been talking about taking them further – they need a new goalkeeper, they need two centre-backs, they need a right wing-back. That’s not to come into the squad, that’s to play.

“That’s exactly what they need. Conte hasn’t got the players he wants to play his way, which is defensive, counter-attacking football. He’s got the attacking players but he hasn’t got the defenders to get him clean sheets.”

TBR View:

Lloris has been a great servant for Tottenham since he joined them from Lyon in a £12 million deal (Daily Mail) back in August 2012. He has been a real leader and has saved Spurs on numerous occasions.

However, he is simply not the same player he once was.

Lloris has been making multiple mistakes every season over the last few years. That has cost Spurs, but they continue to keep their faith in him.

However, at the end of this season, a change has to be made – Tottenham have to replace Lloris with someone much better. Whether they’ll do that, however, remains to be seen.
