Jamie Carragher slams Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi

Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports’ post-match coverage of Arsenal’s defeat to Liverpool (broadcast on 30/10; 21:49) that it will be better for everyone once Skhodran Mustafi leaves the Gunners.

Mustafi was given a rare chance to start for Unai Emery’s men at Anfield. He has only featured in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, even with Arsenal struggling to keep the goals out in the league.

And it quickly became apparent why Emery has decided to use him sparingly this term. Mustafi broke the deadlock with an own goal inside six minutes, as he turned Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross into his own net.

It was a tough night for defenders. The two sides played out a 5-5 draw before the Reds went through on penalties.

And while some players within Arsenal’s squad seemed to prove a real point to Emery, Carragher suggested after the game that Mustafi was definitely not one of them.

“I think them days are gone, Mustafi playing in the Premier League,” he told Sky Sports. “I don’t think how well he played here tonight would change that. He’s just one of those defenders, he makes mistakes. And it affects other people.

“When you play with someone like that, it makes you nervous. Your goalkeeper, your full-backs, you can’t play your own game. You’re always worried that he’s going to make a mistake. I think the quicker he’s gone, the better for everyone.”

It is difficult to see Mustafi getting back into Arsenal’s side. He did not prove any sort of point. And with the Gunners now out of the Carabao Cup, it seems that he is going to have even less game-time to look forward to in the near future.
