Jamie Carragher shares whether he thinks West Ham will get relegated this season

West Ham United have had a terrible start to the 2025/26 season.

Graham Potter is hoping to have a much better campaign than he did last time, but his side just did not do enough when they faced Sunderland on the opening day.

The Black Cats returned to the Premier League for the first time since going down in 2017, and the Stadium of Light, unsurprisingly, was bouncing.

West Ham couldn’t cope with Sunderland. They lost 3-0, and fans of the London Stadium club are fearing the worst now.

Jamie Carragher delivers verdict on West Ham United

West Ham finished 14th in the Premier League table last season, but there were concerns about relegation at one stage.

Potter managed to lead his side to safety and has strengthened the squad through the signings of El Hadji Malick Diouf, Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson. But not a lot has changed.

Facing a newly promoted side in the opening game is always difficult, especially if it’s away from home.

Losing 3-0 is a terrible result, irrespective of the circumstances, and if things don’t change in the coming weeks, the Hammers could be in big trouble.

Jamie Carragher revealed his predictions for the new season on Sky Sports on Monday, and he thinks Wolves, Sunderland and Burnley will be the teams to go down.

However, when asked to name a club in the danger zone, Carragher chose West Ham.

He said: “It wasn’t a great end to last season, the team looks slow and old. The lack of legs in midfield really stood out [against Sunderland].

“Against a promoted team, to get run over like that the way they did, lose the physical challenges, it’s going to be tough.”

West Ham’s next five games in the Premier League after losing to Sunderland

Losing 3-0 to a newly-promoted side on the opening day of the new season has dampened the mood around West Ham.

However, the Irons have no time to sulk as they have some really tough games coming up, including three London derbies.

Each of West Ham’s next five games in the Premier League is concerning.

Chelsea, Forest, Tottenham, and Palace can all batter West Ham if they are as poor as they were against Sunderland, while David Moyes will want to get one over his old employers when he faces them with Everton.

If things don’t go to plan for West Ham in the next five games, they could find themselves in serious trouble, and Potter could be at risk of facing the sack.
