Jamie Carragher shares what surprised him about Everton starlet Gordon

Jamie Carragher has told Super Sunday on Sky Sports (24/4; 19:06) that the pace he saw from Anthony Gordon as Everton lost to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby actually surprised him.

The Toffees were beaten by the Reds at Anfield. But there were some positives for Frank Lampard to take as they look to drag themselves out of trouble in the Premier League.

Everton kept Liverpool at bay for more than an hour. And they did cause some problems for the home side, with Gordon having two penalty shouts turned down in each half.

The youngster was the best Everton player on the pitch, winning plenty of plaudits for the problems he caused. Some will certainly think that he was unlucky not to win a penalty after clashing with Joel Matip.

Carragher was another who was hugely impressed by the 21-year-old. And he suggested that he was actually taken aback by how quick he proved to be.

“I’ve watched him for a while, I’ve known about him coming through, always knew he was a really good player. But, actually seeing him in the flesh commentating, his actual pace surprised me. I knew he was quick, but he was just taking the ball away from players. He’s the first name on the team sheet right now for Everton,” he told Sky Sports.

Anthony Gordon will believe that he can inspire Everton to safety

Everton are now in the bottom three. But they are very much in the race to keep themselves safe. And in many ways, Sunday’s performance will leave them with reason for encouragement.

Gordon’s performance was a real statement. He has the ability to make something happen from nothing. And that ability could be absolutely vital as the Toffees look to pull themselves out of trouble.
