Jamie Carragher sceptical Manchester City will turn to Erling Haaland this summer
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is not certain that Manchester City will attempt to sign Erling Haaland this summer to replace Sergio Aguero.
Writing in his column for the Telegraph, the pundit believes that Pep Guardiola might avoid signing the Borussia Dortmund striker after perfecting his City XI this season, with the Manchester-based club on the verge of winning their fifth Premier League and set to compete in their first UEFA Champions League final.
City have been linked with a plethora of strikers since it was announced that Aguero will be leaving the club after nearly ten years with the club, with Haaland being one of the names rumoured with a transfer to the Manchester giants. But for Carragher, he believes that Guardiola won’t jeopardise the tactical make-up of the team to facilitate for the Norwegian superstar.
Carragher wrote: “That’s one of the reasons why I am sceptical as to whether Guardiola will sign Erling Haaland for a record fee. It could be that Haaland is too good to ignore, but having started to perfect his formula of a ‘team of midfielders’, that would demand a tactical compromise.”
TBR View: Haaland is too good to pass up on for City despite tactical headaches
City will be entering a new era next season when Aguero is no longer part of the furniture with the club, and replacing the Argentine striker will be a task that will weigh greatly on whoever Guardiola decides to bestow this responsibility on, but although Haaland might not fit the current system, the 20-year-old attacker is just too good to pass up on.
Haaland is making a good case for himself to be the defining striker of a new generation of football, with the Dortmund attacker continuing to define the odds with the Bundesliga side on a seemingly regular basis, and for City, they stand in the perfect position to sign the striker to their ranks for next season and to build upon their title-winning season with one of the most in-demand players currently playing.
