After five games back in the Premier League, Sunderland have earned eight points from five games, an excellent start by Regis Le Bris’ side.
Given Sunderland were promoted via the play-offs, most Premier League onlookers had Le Bris’ side down as one of the most likely to be relegated.
Promotion via Wembley affords the least preparation time before the new season begins, but after a summer of impressive spending, Sunderland have coped admirably.
Granit Xhaka has been superb for Sunderland, he’s seamlessly fit into a leadership role at the Stadium of Light.
And then the likes of Nordi Mukiele, Robin Roefs and Omar Alderete have also immediately stepped up – it’s all started very well for Le Bris.
Jamie Carragher revisits his Sunderland relegation prediction
That being said, pundit Jamie Carragher was one of those who thought that Sunderland would be relegated before the season began.
Carragher tipped Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sunderland and Burnley to go down, perhaps in that order.
Of course, Carragher probably wouldn’t have then expected Sunderland to have won two out of their five opening games, an ode to their excellent summer business.

And with that in mind, fellow pundit Jill Scott asked Carragher if he had changed his mind about Le Bris’ side being relegated on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast.
Carragher’s other shouts, Wolves and Burnley are faring worse than Sunderland at the start of the new season.
But even with the chance to change his mind about Le Bris’ team, Carragher declined.
Scott initially asked: “Jamie, do you think Sunderland are still going to get relegated?”
Carragher replied: “I think they will, yeah. You don’t change your predictions in September.”
History suggests Sunderland should survive the drop this season
In terms of the points threshold to survive relegation in previous Premier League seasons, Sunderland’s situation is looking promising.
Wilson Isidor just matched an old Darren Bent record at Sunderland, the signs are looking very positive at the Stadium of Light right now.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 6 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 10 | 5 | 5 | 8 | |
| 7 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 8 | |
| 8 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 6 | 5 | 1 | 8 |
And Sunderland fans will be delighted to learn that, according to BBC Sport, every promoted side in the past 10 seasons with 11 points or more after 10 games has survived.
Of course, Sunderland have eight after five games, meaning they’d need just one win in their next five to reach that threshold.
And whilst there’s a very long season to go, Le Bris really could be onto a winner, a coach who’s managed to immediately make an influx of new signings appear as a coherent team.
