Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher, has said Chelsea have to stop Leeds midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, if they are to see off Marcelo Bielsa’s men this weekend.

Phillips, 25, has been sensational for Leeds this season and has returned from injury to help the Whites to two successive clean sheets, including a win at Everton last weekend.

The performance of Phillips that day got plenty of attention, with Carragher one of a number of pundits to be impressed.

And speaking ahead of Leeds’ clash with Chelsea this weekend, Carragher told Sky Sports that stopping Phillips – who he compared to Paul Scholes – is key for teams looking to beat the Whites.

“Kalvin Phillips was fantastic against Everton and I’ve been wanting to analyse him for a while. When he was pressed, his passing was fantastic. All Phillips did all evening was switch play – it was a Paul Scholes performance. He had acres of space and ran the game from minute one to 90.

“You had to stop Scholes pulling strings in midfield, and against Everton last Saturday, Phillips produced one of the best performances from an individual I’ve seen this season. If you face Leeds, you’ve got to stop him. Maybe it’s a job Tammy Abraham can do in dropping deeper”.

Phillips’ form has earned him and England call this season and he is seen as one of the key midfielders in Gareth Southgate’s squads going forward towards Euro 2021.

The Leeds man is brilliant. On his day, he’s one of the best in the league and in terms of his specific position, probably the best.

The problem Leeds have is keeping hold of him. The big boys will come sniffing if he carries on as he is and it’s not hard to see why, given his performance levels.

Phillips is the driving force in this Leeds team and Chelsea will have their hands well and truly full this weekend.
