Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has waxed lyrical about Nathaniel Phillips following his “brilliant” Champions League performance on Wednesday night.
The 24-year-old began the season as a fringe player at best, but Jurgen Klopp drafted him into first-team action amid a crisis at centre-back.
Phillips has grown into the role, putting in a number of great performances over the past few months, and was in inspired form against Real Madrid at Anfield.

Sadly, Liverpool were unable to overturn a 3-1 deficit, playing out a goalless draw in a game which saw them miss several gilt-edged chances.
But Phillips was great once again – bar one slip-up against Karim Benzema, he was assured, confident, and strong in the air.
Carragher was impressed with the £65,000-a-week man’s efforts, speaking highly of him on CBS Sport on Paramount+ (April 14, 9:55 pm).
“I thought he (Phillips) was brilliant,” he said. “People talk about the big problems at the back.
“I think Phillips has been outstanding since he has come in or certainly done a lot better than people expected.”
It’s been a difficult season for Liverpool but the Reds academy graduate has certainly been one of the main positives from this campaign.
