Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have an 'absolutely amazing' player who he rates even higher than Mo Salah
On Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher and fellow pundit Roy Keane were asked for their top three stars in English football.
They both put Manchester City duo Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland in there, but Keane rounded off his trio with Cristiano Ronaldo.
But Carragher put van Dijk in there ahead of his Liverpool teammate Mo Salah and the host of other talent in the Premier League.
Carragher on van Dijk
He said: “Kevin de Bruyne has been the best player in the league for the last four or five years. You’ve got to say Haaland now. He’s an absolute global superstar.
“And despite his form this season, I’m going to still say Virgil van Dijk, because I think he’s been absolutely amazing over the last four or five years.
“He’s transformed Liverpool, where they were when he came in to where they have been the last two years.
“Listen, (this season) hasn’t been great but I’m not going to judge him on eight games when he’s been amazing for five years.”
Liverpool sit tenth in the Premier League after the defeat at Arsenal on Sunday, below newly-promoted sides Fulham and Bournemouth.
That underlines what their start to the season has been like and they face a fight to get into the top four at their current rate.
Van Dijk has been criticised this season and his levels have been way off what we have come to expect from a man who has made Premier League football look easy at times at Liverpool.
