Jamie Carragher says Liverpool had a player who looked ‘exposed’ vs Spurs

Jamie Carragher has told Super Sunday (broadcast on Sky Sports; 19/12; 18:41) that he felt sorry for Tyler Morton as Liverpool drew with Tottenham, suggesting that the midfield was the biggest problem for the Reds in the remarkable game.

Jurgen Klopp’s side missed the chance to close the gap to Manchester City to one point once again. But they more than played their part in an absolutely incredible game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was a contest that seemed to have absolutely everything. It was particularly impressive with both sides dealing with a raft of changes.

In no area did either side make more changes than in the middle of the park. And with the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago sidelined, it was Morton who came in for a full Premier League debut.

Morton has previously looked outstanding in the Champions League. However, he found the going a little more tricky against Antonio Conte’s side, with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dele Alli all ending up with golden chances.

The 19-year-old still gave a good account of himself. And Carragher insisted that those around him did Morton few favours as he tried to help contain Spurs’ attacking threat.

“Liverpool had a big problem in midfield which was maybe understandable,” he told Super Sunday. “And at times Tyler Morton, I felt for him a little bit. I thought he felt a little bit exposed, left on his own at times.

“Liverpool, the way they played today, was almost two centre-backs and Tyler Morton trying to control Kane and Son, and then the midfield runners, and that’s where all the chances came from. I thought the midfield was the biggest problem today, and maybe not giving enough help to that young lad in midfield. He was left on his own too often.”

Morton display still encouraging, but draw showed how much Liverpool missed Fabinho

Morton is looking impressive whenever he gets a chance for Klopp’s men. He certainly still showed glimpses against Spurs.

But perhaps Sunday’s game highlighted just how important Fabinho is to their fortunes. The Brazilian is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. And not having him available against some of the league’s best attacking players understandably hurt the Reds.
