Jamie Carragher says Ben White needs to get ‘cleverer’ in his defender, following Arsenal loss at Brentford

Jamie Carragher held little back last night as Arsenal lost to Brentford last night, with a number of players in the firing line of the Sky Sports pundit.

Goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard were enough for the Bees to see off the Gunners, who put in a typical inept defensive display.

Mikel Arteta was without both Aubameyang and Lacazette for the clash but also chose not to start the likes of Bukayo Saka. Instead, the young forward line of Pepe, Balogun, and Martinelli struggled to get going.

And at the back, things didn’t look much better either, even with Ben White making his debut for the club.

Carragher says Ben White needs to do more

Despite starting well enough in the game, as the 90 minutes went on, White started to struggle with the presence of Ivan Toney.

And Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports following the game, said White needs to do more if he’s to succeed as a centre-back in a back four.

“He is not going to get taller so he has got to be cleverer with his body shape and movement to deal with big strikers. You want to see him do well but I must say that he was linked with Liverpool for the last 12 to 18 months,” Carragher said on Sky.

“That my fear was that l didn’t want him to come to Liverpool because he is not tall enough and not good enough in the air. When he played in a back three at Brighton, the two alongside him were giants. People are going to be watching tonight and think ‘just play long balls on Ben White’s head and you will get joy’.”

White’s next task could be to try and deal with new Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku. That, of course, could be a worry for the Gunners.

With just one game of the season gone, it always seems that Arsenal’s £50m man is under pressure at the club.
