Jamie Carragher says Arsenal have been doing something the Premier League’s never seen before

Arsenal did not experience a positive weekend.

The Gunners suffered a 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the Emirates Stadium, before Liverpool took full advantage with a 2-0 victory at Manchester City to move 11 points clear in the Premier League.

Of course, there are still 12 games remaining for Arsenal to battle back – and Liverpool only have 11 matches left – so Mikel Arteta needs to ensure his squad are pushing until the very last second.

In the meantime – speaking from the Etihad Stadium on Sunday – Jamie Carragher praised Arsenal for introducing something unique and rare to the Premier League.

Jamie Carragher hails Arsenal’s dominance from corners

When discussing a smart corner routine from Liverpool, which led to Mohamed Salah scoring the opener, the man from Bootle suggested Arsenal have started a trend when it comes to this particular set-piece.

Carragher – who thinks Alexander Isak would reject Arsenal – told Sky Sports: “A great routine from Liverpool. We’re seeing a lot of this this season. With Arsenal, the Premier League has almost never seen something like that before (the dominance from corners).”

Of course, the likes of Stoke City have caused opponents all sorts of trouble under Tony Pulis with that memorable throwing ability from Rory Delap, but no side has ever been so consistently effective from corners as Arsenal are nowadays.

The Gunners have netted 24 goals from corners since the start of last season, as Nicolas Jover ensures Gabriel Magalhaes consistently ends up with a chance to score from this dead ball situation.

Mikel Arteta and Nicolas Jover may need to mix it up

Arsenal have excelled with the tactic of floating a high, pacey cross towards the back post, where the aforementioned Gabriel often benefits.

However, opponents will eventually discover a way to deal with this, so we feel Arteta and Jover need to keep them on their toes by mixing up the routine at times.

For example, the manner in which Liverpool scored at Manchester City – a short pass to the front post, which is then flicked into the box – would surely be an option for Arsenal if opponents fear a deep ball into the back post, leaving the front post vacated in the process.
