Jamie Carragher recently compared reportedly new Liverpool target to John Terry

Liverpool have reportedly joined the race for West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice and are keen on battling Chelsea for his signature – just weeks after Jamie Carragher heaped praise on the England star, comparing one attribute to John Terry.

Rice, 22, has been long linked with a return to Chelsea – having left the Blues to join West Ham as an academy player. It is widely known that his best friend is Chelsea ace Mason Mount, and he clearly still has a lot of affection for the Blues.

But the Guardian claims Liverpool have joined the race for Rice and are among a number of clubs ‘hungrily circling’ the West Ham star ahead of the summer. Meanwhile, 90Min claim West Ham have dropped their asking price to £50million.

Carragher spoke of Rice in a recent edition of Monday Night Football on Sky Sports – as quoted by HITC – claiming that Rice is a “really good passer of the ball” with both feet, claiming he has only see one other player able to do that before, in Terry.

“To be able to play a left-footed pass like that when you are a right-footed player. The only one I can think of, who used to do it consistently, is John Terry,” Carragher said. “He cannot pass? I just don’t see it. He is a really good passer of the ball.”

TBR’s view – Rice would be a stunning addition for Liverpool

What it gives Liverpool is another player that can play at centre-back but also in midfield. Another Fabinho, who has been absolutely crucial to the Reds this season, and another Jordan Henderson.

Henderson turns 31 next summer and while he remains as important as ever to The Reds, Liverpool will be scouring the market for a long-term replacement and Rice fits the bill given his versatility, leadership, England international and style of play.
