Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher is surprised that Everton look set to name Carlo Ancelotti their next full-time manager and are amazed they can tempt him to Goodison Park.

Caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson has helped steady the ship following Marco Silva’s exit, but the Toffees could now appoint one of the biggest names in management.

According to Sky Sports, the Merseyside club reached an agreement in principle on Monday for the 60-year-old to take charge.

The report explains that the Italian boss is “expected” to be announced as the new Everton manager on Thursday or Friday, with his first game at home to Arsenal at the weekend.

Ancelotti was only dismissed by Napoli at the beginning of December and could almost immediately be back in management.

Carragher was asked about reports that Everton were closing in on Ancelotti and feels he could be a great high-profile addition for them, but was left a little surprised.

“I’m surprised that Carlo Ancelotti would take the Everton job with the position that they’re in. I think for Everton to get a manager of the calibre of Ancelotti would be an unbelievable coup for them,” Carragher told Monday Night Football, as quoted by Sky Sports’ official Youtube account.

“I think the job for any Everton manager is can they get them in and around the Champions League places where they are actually challenging. I’m sure the Evertonians are ecstatic [with the Ancelotti reports].”

TBR’s View:

Ancelotti has managed some of the biggest clubs in world football and it would be a major pull if Everton can get the deal for him over the line.

He’s been at the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Juventus during a long career.

There was also a successful spell in England with Chelsea between 2009-2011, where he managed to win a Premier League title and the FA Cup.
