Jamie Carragher named Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones the “best player on the pitch” after his performance in midweek against Tottenham.

The Reds moved to the top of the Premier League table on Wednesday night by beating previous leaders Spurs at Anfield, who now trail them by three points.

Jurgen Klopp’s team seized a late winner with Roberto Firmino’s powerful 90th minute headed goal, as the Merseyside club continued their dominance in home fixtures.

Mohamed Salah’s deflected shot put the hosts in front midway through the first-half, before Heung-Min Son netted a trademark counter-attacking goal shortly after to leave the game well poised.

With 76 per cent possession and plenty of attempts on goal Liverpool will feel they rightfully shaded the scoreline, although visitors Spurs did waste a couple of clear goalscoring opportunities in the second-half that they will regret.

Carragher reacted on Twitter to the Liverpool victory, picking out Reds midfielder Jones as a standout.

The 19-year-old is yet another huge talent to come through the club’s academy and he delivered a real composed performance in the centre of the park, where he was positive in possession and played a role in the build-up for the opening goal.

TBR’s View:

It’s easy to forget that Jones is only a youngster still, as he’s found it effortless in the Liverpool first-team since his breakthrough and already looks an established senior player.

He’s now started four of the last five consecutive Premier League matches to highlight the trust shown in him from his manager Klopp and he looks like he’s improving each week.

There must be caution when tying to make the obvious comparison to club legend Steven Gerrard and supporters should enjoy watching Jones carve out his own path.
