Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports (broadcast on 28/11 from 17:00) that Kalvin Phillips was outstanding as he named the Leeds United midfielder as the man of the match during their win over Everton.

The Whites secured their first victory since October on Saturday. Raphinha’s late strike proved to be decisive in a game that included an incredible number of chances for both sides.

Leeds arguably had the better of the contest. And Phillips was integral to their success. He provided some good cover for the defence.

But he also enjoyed a wonderful night when in possession. He seemed to be pulling the strings for the visitors, and you may do well to find another game in which a player has made a greater number of successful cross-field passes.

And as full-time loomed, Carragher insisted that the 24-year-old was the standout performer amongst a very impressive Leeds side.

“Phillips, he’s been outstanding,” he told Sky Sports. “You see his stats, top of everything. There’s been other performers as well, think Klich alongside him in midfield. I think Luke Ayling’s been really good as well.

“In fact, it’s been a really big team performance, but I think he’s been outstanding. Everton never really got to grips with him from minute one.”

It is probably no coincidence that Leeds have not conceded a goal since Phillips made his return.

Of course, that is not all down to the England international. Robin Koch and Illan Meslier both arguably produced superb performances at Goodison Park.

But Leeds certainly look to be a lot stronger with Phillips back in the side. And Phillips – who signed a £20,000-a-week deal in 2019, according to the Daily Mail – looks keen to make up for lost time after missing a few weeks with injury.
