Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports (broadcast on 7/11; 19:35) that he believes that Aston Villa would be a great move for Steven Gerrard, but suggested that he may want to stay at Ibrox and try and retain the title with Rangers.

Villa are looking for their next manager after sacking Dean Smith on Sunday. It comes with the Villans losing their last five Premier League games.

The result leaves them just a couple of points above the relegation zone. But Villa are a huge club with the finances to kick on. They threatened to challenge for the European spots last season.

Gerrard is one of the names on their radar. The Telegraph reported on Sunday that he is one of their top targets, along with Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Gers fans have always been realistic about what the future is likely to hold for Gerrard. He led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title last season.

Villa making a move would surely leave the Englishman with food for thought. But Carragher has suggested that he can see the time not quite being right for his former teammate.

“I think Aston Villa as a club would be a great move for Steven Gerrard,” he told Sky Sports. “But the situation he finds himself in right now is he’s taken the title off Celtic last season and he’s in a great position to win it again.

“I think in a perfect world, you want to stay at Rangers until the end of the season and come away from there with two titles.”

Rangers must surely be slightly concerned about Aston Villa making approach for Steven Gerrard

Villa are languishing towards the bottom of the Premier League table. But they have the potential and resources to move right up the league before too long.

As Carragher hints, a move to Villa Park could be a fantastic one for Gerrard.

With that in mind, Rangers will surely be slightly concerned. Certainly, Gerrard is surely not going to turn down any interest without giving it some thought.

But he did distance himself from the Newcastle job when he was linked. So perhaps that will leave the Light Blues with reason for optimism.
