Jamie Carragher praised Liverpool’s opponents Atletico Madrid for their performance on Tuesday night.
Liverpool fell to a 1-0 away defeat on their trip to Spain to face Atletico, who scored early in the fourth minute and then shut up shop with a defensive masterclass.
Saul Niguez reacted quickly to tap in from close-range, as the Reds for once showed a vulnerability from dealing with a corner.
It means that the La Liga outfit have a marginal advantage on aggregate in the Champions League last-16 tie and the teams lock horns again in March at Anfield for the second leg.
Jurgen Klopp’s team have been used to blowing a lot of teams apart domestically this season and that’s why they are on course for an inevitable first Premier League title, but hit a minor bump in the road with Atletico’s stubborn defence.
Former Liverpool centre-back Carragher gave his assessment on social media after the European result.
“That was a classic European away performance at home by Atletico! They had the best chances and Liverpool found it very difficult to carve any out themselves. Anfield will be lively!” Carragher wrote on his personal Twitter account.

TBR’s View:
Liverpool were up against a really stubborn opposition that managed to hold on for a win in midweek, but surely the Merseyside team are still slight favourites to progress to the quarter-finals.
They have shown in the past that they are a dominate force at Anfield and they seem to find something special on a European night too.
They overturned a 3-0 deficit in last season’s semi-final against Barcelona last season and know if they hit anywhere near top gear they can fight back against Atletico, who are likely to deploy a similar defensive plan.
